Yvonne Arnaud

Bradford Daily Telegraph, 4 November 1938

In this newspaper article, from Bradford in West Yorkshire, we learn that Miss Mawer was due to give her lecture-demonstration again. She must have been pleased to be called ‘one of the greatest living experts of mime’ and I would have been interested to know who the author considered were the other exponents at that time. Perhaps they were referring to Yvonne Arnaud, who is mentioned further down in the article: “Miss Mawer achieved fame some years ago by her appearance with Miss Yvonne Arnaud in the French mime play L’Enfant Prodigue.” I have checked the Wikipedia page and Yvonne Arnaud (1890-1958) was indeed a famous actress.

Irene’s lecture-demonstration was due to follow the pattern that she generally followed, covering the history of mime right through to the present day.

Joyce Ruscoe is also named as assisting Irene Mawer with the lecture demonstration – and as well as being a Fellow of the Institute of Mime, she is stated as being a member of staff at the Ginner-Mawer School.
