Portsmouth Theatres
This very pretty document is undated and apart from what I can see in the photo, I know nothing else about its origin. It obviously meant something significant to Irene Mawer, as she kept it safely with the few documents to be found after her death.
My extensive notes about Miss Mawer’s life do not mention Portsmouth, even as a passing comment. Perhaps I will one day come upon a newspaper clipping which will reveal all!
Meanwhile, I shall enjoy the pretty picture and spend some time trying to work out the various meanings of the characters and images (so far, I only recognise Pan, and the two theatre faces of Tragedy and Comedy. What is the significance of the vine? (It looks far too innocent a scene for Bacchus, surely?) Any ideas? Please let me know. Thanks.
