Mawer Remembered

Daily Telegraph, 14 November 1964

After Miss Mawer’s death, a memorial Mime Competition was held in her memory. Miss Mawer died in 1962 and this clipping from 1964 points to the esteem in which she was held. Distinguished patrons who were invited to see the competition included Sybil Thorndike, Peggy Ashcroft, Lewis Casson, and Laurence Olivier.

The adjudicators included Arthur Askey and Rose Bruford, the latter had been a pupil of Miss Mawer and now ran her own drama school.

Her pupils and colleagues, who meet afterwards for a reunion of the now defunct Ginner-Mawer School, have inaugurated the competition as a memorial to her. In addition her mime library has just been reopened at the British Theatre Museum.
