Diploma of Miming

Links between the Institute of Mime and the north of England were quite strong in the mid-1930s.  This newspaper article (please see attached photo) gives information about activites in Durham.

Mrs Margaret Marshall gained her Teachers’ Diploma from the Institute of Mime – the only person in the north of England to do so at this point, three years after the foundation of the Institute of Mime.

Miss Marshall was a stalwart of the amateur drama scene in Durham, actively working with the Women’s Institute (where her teaching qualification in mime would have been perfect for continuing the work that Miss Mawer was doing with the WI through the Institute of Mime) and the Durham Amateur Dramatic Society.  Working with the latter group at the end of October 1936, Margaret Marshall produced a play called ‘The Circle’, written by Somerset Maugham.

I love that the newspaper journalist has signed herself as Miss Gadabout!

Please like/share/comment so that the ‘bots’ in the search engines can find Irene Mawer as she deserves to be more well known. Thank you.
