Theatre – Herodes Atticus, Athens

In 1930, Miss Mawer went to Athens!  About 40 people, all connected with the Ginner-Mawer School of Dance and Drama, went with her.  The school gave performances at two theatres, one of which was (and still is) an open-air theatre on the Acropolis, next to the Parthenon.

My husband, Andy, and I are currently visiting Greece on a mini-pilgrimage in honour of Irene Mawer and top of the list was the Acropolis, which must have meant so much to both Irene Mawer and Ruby Ginner.

My photo, attached to this blog post, shows the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.  In modern times, the theatre is open air, but would have originally had a wooden roof.  I will write more about my trip to Athens and of the theatre in a future blog post.  I am still in Greece, in my campervan and as you can imagine, everything is still a whirlwind.  Andy and I were in Athens at the weekend, and today we are in Messini (in the Peloponnese), where we have returned in order to collect a dog which we have adopted.  So everything is very busy.

Irene loved everything about Ancient Greece and I tried to imagine how she would have reacted when she saw the Acropolis for the first time.  She must have been thrilled and amazed.  I will write more about the Parthenon in a future blog post.

Irene had at least one dog during her life, so, again, with Irene in mind, I will go and pay attention to my new dog…
