Helga Burgess; Institute of Mime 15 February 1936

Helga Burgess & Institute of Mime

At a meeting of the Townswomen’s Guild, Miss Helga Burgess, of the Institute of Mime, gave a lecture-demonstration, thereby carrying on the line of education initiated by Miss Mawer.

I think this may be the first time that Miss Burgess receives a credit in a newspaper review, however, by the following year (1937) she is written about fairly extensively, in particular when she visits Northern Ireland to give the lecture-demonstrations.

Today’s clipping goes on to say that in addition to the mime demonstration, there was also a singing competition. It is not stated whether the singing was separate to Helga’s talk. I would tend to think that it was separate and was a different part of the evening’s entertainment as it has not been mentioned in any other reviews of lecture-demonstrations – though I can not be sure of this.
